Gatomboya AA

dried fruit, papaya, piloncillo

Origin: Nyeri, Kenya
Altitude: 1700-1800 masl
Variety: SL 28, SL 34
Process: Washed

SL 28 & SL 34 are coffee cultivars developed by Scottish Labs in Kenya. The SL 28 cultivar was selectively developed for flavor quality (aka the winey characteristics that are typical of many coffees from Kenya) and the SL 34 cultivar was developed for disease and drought tolerance. We find in this cup it translates to wonderful notes of dried fruit, papaya, and piloncillo with a rich, syrupy body and lingering bittersweet finish.

Imported by Red Fox Coffee Merchants

More from the importer:

Gatomboya factory was established in 1987 by Mathira Coop but later joined Barichu Coop in 1996. Gatomboya serves over 700 smallholder farmers within four different communities. Coffee is harvested by hand between the months of October and January.

After the coffee cherry is harvested it is brought to the factory and then weighed. Smallholder farmers collect their earnings at that time. Coffee cherry is then sent through a disk depulper removing most of the fruit, fermented for 24-hours then washed again making the entire process 72-hours. Time in which parchment coffee dries heavily depends on the climate, ambient temperature, and volume being processed which could take up to 15 days and as little as one week.
