On the western edge of Embu County, Kenya lies the Gatirima factory, which is operated by the Kibugu Farmers Co-op. Over 1000 active members of the co-op contribute coffee to this washing station, where it is mechanically de-pulped, fully washed, and sun-dried on raised beds for up to 15 days. This lot exudes notes of star fruit, raspberry sorbet, and honey.
From the importer Red Fox Coffee Merchants:
Gatirima factory is affiliated to Kibugu Farmers Cooperative society along with four other coffee factories. It is located in one of Kenya’s great coffee-growing regions, Embu County. There are now 1,100 active members averaging around one hectare of land. Producers also grow tea, corn, bananas, gravellea, macadamia, and eucalyptus. The factory uses a disc pulper to remove the fruit from the inner parchment layer. Coffee cherry is fully washed and sundried on raised beds. Drying can take up to 15 days, while continuous sorting and hand turning of parchment takes place.
