In earlier years, the company operated between Manila and Seattle as a bridge for direct import to the US. In the last few years, KALSADA shifted its operations to invest directly in the lives and lands of Filipino smallholder producers and farmer-partners. KALSADA supports their financial autonomy and cultural dignity through long-term relationships, ultimately providing them with improved farming infrastructure and education on sustainable agronomy. Kalatungan range, a protected, biodiverse area that’s home to several endemic flora and fauna, as well as the Manobo tribe. With rich, volcanic soil and a unique microclimate, it is an ideal place to grow coffee. The Manobo initially cultivated it for consumption, then moved to commercial production up until coffee prices significantly dropped in the 1960s. This led them to switch to sugarcane and corn as their primary crops.

The coffee from this side of the country had long shown potential. To help realize that, Kalsada established the Sitio San Roque Mill in 2020, their first mill in Mindanao. Since then, it has become a central hub for coffees grown across the slopes of Mt. Kalatungan, from Pangantucan and Talakag to Dalwangan in Mt. Kitanglad, Bukidnon. Cherries arrive at the mill through a variety of ways - habal-habal (motorbike), bao-bao, trucks—and in more remote areas, they’re still brought in by foot, carabao, or horse.

Within five years, Sitio San Roque grew into Kalsada’s Mindanao hub, welcoming cherries, parchment, and green coffee from 361 farmer-families.

In 2023, with the generous support of the Ramos Family, KALSADA built the Stacy Wang Ramos Dry Mill, a significant step forward for their post-harvest operations.
